From the Principal
It's hard to believe we're in Week 6 already. It’s really been a wonderful journey so far, getting to know a new community, school and of course the wonderful students and staff at CPS. We have had 60 new students commencing at CPS this year and it has been a delight getting to know them and their families. The Kinder students really have settled in well and the many older siblings have helped to ease this transition.
Cambridge Primary School is thriving. Particularly in regards to the Department's "Lifting Literacy – Reading Priority". Teaching staff, lead by Mrs Stevens, have successfully implemented a new whole-school Literacy screen for students from Kindergarten to Year 6. The commitment to collaboration here at CPS is outstanding and teaching teams and their approaches and standards are aligned which helps to creating a positive and supportive learning ecosystem.
I would like to introduce and congratulate our year 6 SRC representatives:

On Friday 6 March, I took the SRC on an excursion to The Hobart Conference Centre to attend the 2024 GRIP Leadership conference held at Macquarie Wharf. It was a fun day out together, team building and being vulnerable, meeting like-minded peers. The conference provided our students with a toolkit for embarking on new and exciting initiatives and I look forward to supporting their next idea!
Cambridge Primary really is an amazing community to learn and grow together and I am looking forward to the next 4 weeks with you all.

Car Park Safety
Thank you to parents and carers for your understanding during the redevelopment phase with the increase in number of vehicles in the car park. We have sectioned off an area near the large gum tree and pine tree to help the buses exit to the main road. See the photos below.
Election Day Sausage Sizzle – Volunteers Needed
The School Association will be running a sausage sizzle fundraiser on Saturday 23 March 2024 at the Cambridge School polling booth.
Make sure you come and see us after you have voted and grab your democracy sausage!
Volunteers are needed to help run the stall. So, if you can spare a couple of hours between 9am and 3pm on election day, please contact Matt Fenton on 0417 127769 or matt.fenton@bigpond.com.
Term 1 Surfing 2024
In weeks 3 and 4 this term, grade 5 and 6 students were given the opportunity to have three sessions at Clifton Beach with the Coastrider Surf Academy. We had varied conditions in the water over the three days with the students getting to build their water confidence in rough and clean waves.
The program involved students spending one half of each session surfing and the other half learning about beach safety, beach fitness and surfing equipment. The progress students made at surfing over the three days was remarkable with a great deal of grit and courage being shown.
Many parents lent a hand on the beach sessions and their help was greatly appreciated by students and staff alike. These beach sessions will help all the students to be more aware of risks to their safety when they are at the beach and perhaps develop surfing as a lifelong passion!

2024 Athletics Carnival
On Wednesday in week 4, Cambridge Primary held its Athletics Carnival for 2024. Even though it was a very warm day, students showed great energy and enthusiasm as they participated in a variety of events. The event was well supported by Cambridge Primary families, and it was great to see and hear the encouragement for the students.
The athletics carnival is a great opportunity for students to compete and work towards qualifying for the interschool carnival that will be held in early April. Many Cambridge staff put in extra work to make sure everything was ready for the carnival.
A special thank you needs to go to the parents who assisted with the timing of races, marshalling, recording, handing out ribbons and returning equipment for events. That help was essential to the carnival being a success. Our next school carnival will be the cross-country carnival in term 2 and students who qualified for the athletics interschool carnival will be receiving their invitations soon.

Edsmart Messaging System
From Tuesday 12 March 2024 our School will be switching over to a new messaging platform for communicating with you.
The new platform, called EdSmart is an Australian platform which is designed to improve communication in school communities by allowing electronic messaging i.e. SMS and emails. For now, it will be used to manage absences messages i.e. you will receive a SMS or email alert if your child is absent from school and we have not been notified by 9am. You will be asked to respond to the message.
The platform will, over time, be rolled out across all Tasmanian Government Schools and new features will be added.
You will receive a text message and/or an email with further details. Note, the text message sender will be a shortened version of our school’s name - Please keep an eye out for it!
Further information is available on the Department’s website
We will still be using Schoolzine for our newsletters and general information, and Seesaw for sharing of learning.
